BOOKS
Child Trauma Handbook
Ricky Greenwald
The Haworth Maltreatment and Trauma Press 2005
ISBN 978-0789027931
A detailed training manual/guide to treating trauma-exposed children and those with behaviours that indicate trauma and loss-related issues. It takes therapists step by step through all necessary aspects and includes exercises to experiment with doing things in what may be a new way. It is applicable to many orientations and written in a really accessible way as a child-centred and common sense approach based on findings from motivational interviewing, TF-CBT and EMDR.
Through the Eyes of a Child: EMDR with Children
Robert Tinker and Sandra Wilson
WW Norton 1999
ISBN 978-393702871
Answers the question: How do you do EMDR with children and adolescents haunted by traumatic events? The adult protocol is modified to use with those as young as two, and the author gives detailed sessional examples of work concerning both simple and complex traumas. A classic book and well worth reading if you are contemplating taking EMDR training.
The Boy who was Raised as a Dog
Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz
Basic Books 2006
ISBN 978-0465056521
This book ranges wide on chaotic and neglectful backgrounds of young clients and how these traumas have affected brain development. The subtitle “and other stories from a child psychiatrist’s notebook” could lead counsellors to think it is not for them – but after we’ve worked with young people for a while, this sort of book enhances our understanding, as it links with our experiences and shows how latest evidence on the workings of the brain absolutely must be taken into account in our practice if we are to be effective. An inspiring book about how the mind can recover. I defy enyone not to experience a whole range of feelings after reading the chapter ‘The Raven’ about Amber, a 17-year-old girl who cuts and dissociates as a result of past trauma.
